Bring your own device (BYOD) programs are part of an international move towards individualising learning, which can increase independence and self-initiated learning in students and extend their learning beyond the classroom. Students who have their own devices have been found to take greater pride and ownership over their learning.
Penshurst Public School is a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) school and therefore students moving into grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 are expected to provide their own device (no iPads) in use for educational purposes.
Having ongoing access to technology will help your child develop greater independence, increase engagement, and develop skills required to thrive in the 21st Century. A focus of this initiative is digital citizenship, which is the responsible use of technology.
Your child will learn digital skills, ethics, etiquette, and online safety. These are important aspects of participating in today’s world.

Chromebook purchasing portal
Penshurst Public School has arranged a purchasing portal for parents and carers to purchase school approved chromebooks. This portal is exclusive to Penshurst Public School via JB H-Fi Education Platform and offers choices from Chromebooks, Windows Laptops or Apple MacBook: It is, however, not mandatory to purchase from the portal, BYOD Devices may also be purchased from your preferred retailer.
To purchase an approved BYOD Device, please go to https://www.jbeducation.com.au/byod/ using password of PPS2025. Once you have completed these steps you will be able to see the available products for purchasing.
The purchasing portal is live throughout the years. Orders will be delivered to you or can be picked up from retail shop.
Once students receive their Chromebooks, Penshurst Public School requests that every student clearly label their device. Furthermore, students must purchase a case, bag, or sleeve to protect their device. A set of headphones is also recommended for use when listening to multimedia resources in order to minimise noise levels in class.
Cyber safety and acceptable use
Our school's BYOD program allows our school to introduce safe information and communications technology (ICT) practices in a relatively controlled environment. We require all parents and students to sign an acceptable use document before they can use any form of ICT within our school. Early in Term 1, students will learn about not giving out personal information, cyber-bullying, safe and appropriate online language, what to do if a student feels unsafe.
How can I control what my child sees at home?
There are various available options to ensure that the internet in your home is being used safely. We recommend that students only use their devices when they are in the company of a parent orguardian, this will ensure you children are aware they are being monitored.
Furthermore, there are numerous existing programs which restrict the internet sites that your child can visit. Below are links outlining the details of free and paid programs that you can download to ensure your child is safely accessing the internet.
